Overview
Metric Mate, a fitness tracking app, came to us with the goal of creating an intuitive, cross-platform application that connects seamlessly with their proprietary T.A.P. Sensor. The app needed to cater to fitness enthusiasts, personal trainers, and athletes, offering various workout tracking, history management, and data analysis tools. With free and premium subscription models, Metric Mate sought to provide a personalized fitness experience adaptable to users at different stages of their fitness journey.
Challenges
Metric Mate’s primary challenge was to create a flexible and user-friendly platform that incorporated real-time sensor data from the T.A.P. Sensor. The app needed to differentiate features based on user type, with custom workouts and advanced analytics for premium users, while maintaining a streamlined experience for free and anonymous users. Additionally, the platform had to integrate social sharing and data export options, enabling users to engage with their community and track their progress over time.
Our Approach: Design Phase
In the design phase, we worked closely with Metric Mate to outline user flows and establish the requirements for each user persona—free, premium, and anonymous users. We then developed an intuitive UI design that supported users’ workout needs:
Custom Workouts and Guided Training: For users creating custom workouts, we designed the T.A.P IN module to allow easy setup of exercises, complete with options for setting reps, resistance, and rest intervals. Premium users gained access to Metric Mate Guided Workouts, with pre-designed routines crafted for different fitness goals.
Real-Time Effort Charts and Sensor Data: The app integrated real-time effort charts, providing visual feedback from the T.A.P. Sensor. This allowed users to monitor performance metrics, including reps and resistance, in real-time during workouts, which was especially valuable for premium users looking for detailed analysis.
We created these initial designs in Figma and shared them with Metric Mate for feedback. After refining based on their input, we moved forward with a design that provided a tailored experience for each user type.
Our Approach: Development Phase
With the designs finalized, our development team used React Native to build a cross-platform app, ensuring that both iOS and Android users had a consistent experience. The backend was built using NodeJS and hosted on AWS, enabling secure, scalable data handling for both workout histories and real-time sensor integration.
Workout History and Performance Analysis:
We designed a robust history module allowing users to track their progress across workouts. For premium users, we provided additional views to analyze workout data in chart format, along with quick filters to review performance over different time frames.
Settings and Diagnostics for T.A.P. Sensor:
Users could connect and disconnect the app from the T.A.P. Sensor, with settings available for rep detection, weight calibration, and device diagnostics. This functionality was essential for ensuring the sensor’s accurate tracking and offering personalized workout experiences.
Throughout development, our team held regular check-ins with Metric Mate, sharing progress and incorporating their feedback on functionality and design. Each feature was rigorously tested to ensure it met Metric Mate’s high standards for user experience.
Our Approach: Deployment Phase
Once development was complete, our QA team performed thorough testing across both mobile platforms to ensure stability and seamless interaction with the T.A.P. Sensor. After final approval, we deployed the app on AWS, ensuring a secure, reliable environment for Metric Mate’s user base.
Results
Metric Mate successfully launched a comprehensive fitness platform that leveraged real-time sensor data, customizable workouts, and performance analytics to enhance users’ fitness journeys. The app received positive feedback, with users highlighting the intuitive workout tracking and valuable insights from the effort charts. Premium users especially appreciated the guided workouts and data export features, reinforcing Metric Mate’s value for fitness-focused audiences.
