Safe Route is a mobile application designed to improve both road user safety and first responder efficiency. With real-time traffic updates and emergency vehicle alerts, the app helps users make informed decisions during their travels. For first responders, it offers the ability to minimize response times by sending real-time alerts, helping them anticipate road hazards or traffic congestion, and reach destinations more quickly. For road users—including drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists—the app provides early warnings of approaching emergency vehicles, enabling them to make space and prevent accidents.
Challenges: Overcoming Barriers to Seamless Communication
Developing Safe Route presented several challenges that needed careful consideration. First and foremost, the app had to ensure seamless real-time communication between road users and first responders to enable timely alerts. Additionally, the app needed to provide accurate data to avoid delays or wrong turns, particularly when traffic conditions were rapidly changing. Gaining user trust was also a priority; convincing both road users and first responders to adopt the app required demonstrating its reliability and ease of use. Lastly, the platform had to be scalable to handle vast amounts of real-time data and support a growing user base, all while maintaining high levels of performance.

In the development phase, the platform’s backend was built with Node.js, ensuring efficient management of real-time traffic and emergency vehicle data. The app was developed using React Native to ensure compatibility and smooth performance across both iOS and Android devices. To support the massive data flow and user interactions, the platform was deployed on AWS, providing a reliable infrastructure that can scale as the user base grows. For data management, PostgreSQL was used to ensure secure and efficient storage, retrieval, and processing of traffic data.
